As it has been made crystal clear to us all, we live in the “Age of Information”. Our industry, has moved from the industrial to information at a lightning fast pace and as our management systems try to catch up, we find our systems, policies and management process rooted deep in the old ways.

The old ways of “command and control”, or “manage by objective” while effective in many cases for industry, there is a new wave of skilled, direction oriented force of workers filling our work-spaces. The turnover records, as well as satisfaction reports, are telling us we need to change faster as these new workers are somehow different. These knowledge workers need something more to produce by global standards.

The old ways measured value by buildings, equipment, inventory and quarterly earnings as our guides to success. We see a new measure in this global market of satisfaction, continuing education, experienced workers, knowledge sharing communities and the overall well being of our business society. These new measures are valued as much to the future of our companies as the “bottom line” measures of old.

I have read a lot about military comparisons to business and I believe many are valuable lessons for us. We can see all aspects of management, training, collaboration objectives defined and fulfilled in a battle scenario in a short period of time to see how we would react in similar business situations. One very revealing comparison I read talked about the movie “Black Hawk Down” and how men, highly trained were given unclear message as to their objective, levels of authority and rules of engagement. The results were catastrophic, loss of resources and lives were enormous while nothing but discouragement, frustration and despair remained in the hearts of the men who were as motivated as people could be.

Studies show, it is the number one moral killer in any group to have unclear objectives, or lack of training/support to accomplish your goals. A culture of communication and collaboration will only happen if our values are changed, if the cost of change is understood and taken seriously. Cultural change is either hard or impossible. If we are looking for quick fixes or just to add some new catch phrases to out community it will not happen. There must be buy-in not corporate initiative, Citizenship not Empowerment is what we strive for.

The loyalty to a culture and the secondary messages our cultures preach are far more powerful then the meetings/seminars of mind control and coercion. Let us begin to teach, to train, to help people find their voices, with their voice and ours, we can build teams and solutions that live and inspire and speak to all who want their voices to be heard. You think that last paragraph was a bit over the top? yea, me too, but it was fun writing it.

Bill

I welcome a conversation with you as to the possibility of a fit between my talents and your companies needs. I am 47 years young and with an unquenchable hunger for knowledge and an IQ of Mensa range.

I have many years of technology, leadership, consulting and media. I love a challenge of both technological and cultural dilemmas. With my ability to learn and my love for the technology It is not always how much you know in this industry but how fast you can adapt and learn that sets us apart.

With over 30 years of successful team-building/leadership and learning it is impossible for my resume to express my abilities.
Please feel free to call me anytime to talk. Extensive list of references will be made available upon request.
